Ancient Garment Incense DIY – 3 Heritage Formulas for Wardrobe & Daily Wear

What: Three Sources

All three formulas are adapted from texts in the Chinese Incense Literature Collection:

  1. Palace Heavy – based on Sui Yang Di Hou Gong Zhu Xiang Yao Fang(Sui Dynasty harem incense-medicine formulas). Thick, lasting 10–15 days, for wardrobes & heavy coats.
  2. Literati Light – reduced version of Huang Tingjian’s Zhi Ying Xiang Fang Tie(“Infant Incense”). Gentle sinking-sandalwood base, for pouches & thin garments.
  3. Republican Practical – from Xiang Zhuang Pin Zhi Zao Da Quan(1930s). Moth-repellent blend with Perrilla(Pey-choy), Atractylodes, moxa; for whole-wardrobe hanging.

All simplified for home use: no alcohol/honey steeping, just mortar + cotton bags.

Why DIY Instead of Store-Bought?

Commercial sachets lean on synthetics—sharp, flat, headache-inducing. Heritage blends use whole botanicals; the layering has “intellectual depth.” Customizable by scenario. And the making itself is a miniature incense practice—weighing, sorting, pounding, filling—one quiet hour.

How: Quick Recipe Sketches

Palace Heavy (30 g total): Aloeswood 6 g, Sandalwood 5 g, Clove 4 g, Cinnamon 3 g, Lingling 4 g, Nardostachys 3 g, Licorice 2 g, Aged Mugwort 3 g. Bake briefly at low temp, crack cloves/cinnamon, fill coarse linen. ~15-day refresh.

Literati Light (15 g total): Aloeswood 4 g, Sandalwood 2 g, Clove 1 g, Borneol 0.3 g, Angelica dahurica2 g, Licorice 1 g. Hand-break aloes/sandal to rice-grain size (not powder). Double-layer silk pouch. ~7-day grace.

Republican Practical (50 g total): Eupatorium(Pey-choy) 10 g, Atractylodes8 g, Aged Mugwort 8 g, Cinnamon bark 5 g, Clove 4 g, Sandalwood 5 g, Dried Mint 4 g, Aged Tangerine Peel 6 g. Cut in sections, not powder. Hang across closet shelves. ~30-day repellency.

Two Forms

  • Sachet: loose cut herbs in cotton/silk — portable, lapel, drawer.
  • Scented Card/Disc: bind herbs with a little honey + elm powder, press into 5 cm discs, shade-dry, string-hang — closet, canopy, car. Smoother release, 1930s style.

7-Day Retention Test

Place one pouch each in: (A) sealed wardrobe, (B) pocket, (C) ventilated shelf. Sniff same time daily, score 1–5. You’ll see Palace peaks Day 3 in sealed, Literati best Day 1, Practical surprisingly better in ventilation than sealed—because Atractylodes+ mint need air to “wake.”

Advanced: Lingnan Herbs

Beihu Lurecords southern small scents—Hongjing(red acacia flower), henna flower, Linglingvariants. Try adding 1 g dried henna petals to Literati Light for a “pink-sweet dusting over aloes” Lingnan variation. That’s where the formula becomes yours.
